The Baltimore Sun article dated February 15, 2017 titled “Baltimore schools CEO: No commitments yet from State House, City Hall to close funding gap” mischaracterized the funding of charter schools vs traditional schools. By attributing the funding difference between charter and traditional schools to meals and buses, the Sun oversimplifies the issue and fails to address its complexities.  Charter school funding is guided by state law.  By definition, charter schools receive more direct funding, and fewer centralized services, to allow charter schools the autonomy to run innovative programming models for local public school students. Comparisons between charter and traditional school funding, which fail to take into account this distinction are simply misleading and inaccurate.
