About Us

What makes us unique

Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy through the utilization of a year-round schooling model, provides more consistent opportunities to engage in instruction at the school level. Moreover, the year-round schedule allows the school-based teams time to utilize data to more frequently provide targeted support during the times between sessions to meet the individual needs of the students. The focus on technology allows students the opportunity to interact with hardware not current and/or relevant in many of the homes in the surrounding area. All students have the opportunity to utilize 21st century technology as students in grades 2nd-5th have their own Netbook to assist with accessing the curriculum. Students in Pre-K-1st grades have class iPads and grade level computer labs Our afterschool program provided by The Child First Authority includes intramural sports, academic enrichment, and fine arts activities for all students.

Community

For many parents in the community, the school is a critical resource and support throughout the early years of their child’s life. Since 2012, we have partnered with the University of Maryland School of Social Work through the Promise Heights Initiative, to improve the educational, health and developmental outcomes of children from birth to young adult in the West Baltimore community of Upton/Druid Heights. FLTPA is one of four schools receiving the comprehensive services of this program. The key partners of the program include: B’More for Healthy Babies, Little Flowers Early Childhood Care, YMCA Head Start, and Reading Partners. Promise Heights also hosts two Parent University groups: one for parents of children 0-3 and one for children 3-5. These partners and structures bring continuity, considerable resources and stability to the families in the community.

Mission and Vision

Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy is in the Upton community endeavoring to lay the foundation for success in middle, high school, college, and the 21st century workplace for our students. The comprehensive educational programs for students and families include a Head Start Program, Pre-K, and a kindergarten to fifth grade which creates a pipeline to support academic outcomes. The programs within the school are designed to support the students and their families We aim to increase the academic achievement of all students, in partnership with the community to ensure that our students have the attitudes, skills, and proficiencies needed to be successful at each of these stages. Our mission is to accelerate the opportunities and outcomes for our children by demanding nothing, but excellence form the students, staff, and community. The school leaders, staff, and parents at FLTPA believe that great outcomes for our students can be achieved using the Learn, Love, Live framework. Learn: We combine a rigorous academic curriculum with research-based instructional practices, data-driven decision-making, partnerships with community resources and technology. The school uses the latest technology to engage and motivate students and to help teachers deliver the academic experience. Love: FLTPA actively promotes and embraces core values to help our students to resolve conflict and create a solid foundation on which to build relationships. We use the model of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to identify, adapt and sustain effective school-wide behavior support practices. Live: All students have the opportunity to take advantage of multiple field trips: one trip is out of state. These trips introduce our students to new environments and expose them to a broader world. The school climate is one that encourages learning, supports educator development, and parent engagement.

How To Apply

Lottery Guidelines

According to Maryland Charter School Legislation (Statute9-102(1-13)), enrollment in public charter schools is open to all students on a space available basis and admits students on a lottery basis if more students apply than can be accommodated.  As a conversion school that serves an attendance area, Furman L Templeton Preparatory Academy lottery procedures apply to: any K-5 vacancies that exist after all in-zone K-5 students are served.

Lottery participation is open to all students who are residents of Baltimore City.  Lottery participation is also open to non-resident students who pay tuition at the rate establishes by Baltimore City Schools – through available slots are allotted to Baltimore City students first. A public charter school may not limit enrollment based on student’s race, color, religion, national origin, language spoken, intellectual or athletic performance.

All  students’ who are enrolled in the public school at the time it is converted into a public charter school and siblings of students already admitted to or attending the same contract school are exempted from the lottery process.  Any students within these criteria will be enrolled into the school.

Lottery Process

Furman L Templeton Preparatory will make a public announcement of enrollment deadlines through the school website, school newsletter, community outreach, and/or email. Evidence of the school’s public announcement will be documented and maintained at school.

School application will be made available to all interested parties. Applications may not ask for any identifying student information i.e. race, religion, special education status, home language, free/reduced meal status, test scores, previous grades, parent income status, etc. All application must be submitted by posted deadline.

If the school is over-subscribed at the end of the enrollment period, then all the applications go into the lottery. The lottery is a system of random selection of pre-registration applications that identifies students for enrollment and generates the school’s waiting list. During the lottery process, all completed and accepted applications submitted during the enrollment period are publicly drawn in random order until capacity is reached and the remainder is placed on the waiting list.
The enrollment lottery will be conducted by staff of Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy and witnessed by a representative of Baltimore City Public Schools.

The enrollment lottery draw will be held at 9 AM on TBA at Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy, 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21217. All interested parties are invited to attend the enrollment lottery draw.

Lottery for Out of Zone Students

The public lottery for all out-of-zone students will be held on TBA, at 9:00 AM, in the school auditorium. All parents and guardians are encouraged to attend. You will receive a call and acceptance letter if your child is selected to attend Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy.
